Pakistan’s leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria was released by the Essex police after he had been earlier arrested for allegations of spot-fixing. The incident had allegedly happened in an English domestic Pro40 match last season and he was called for enquiries in May. Apart from Kaneria, Mervyn Westfield was also involved in the issue.

A police statement read, “Essex police can confirm that a 29-year-old man from Chelmsford has been released from bail in connection with an investigation into cricket-match irregularities.”

The issue was the no-balls bowled in a game between Essex and Durham in September in 2009, which seemed to have caught the police’s eyes. Kaneria had been a part of the Pakistani side for a couple of Tests in UK, before being dropped from the side.

This comes at a time when Pakistan’s Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir are already under the scanner for charges related to spot-fixing.

Pakistan Cricket Board’s chairman, Ijaz Butt, has spoken to the media for the first time since the Pakistani high commission had proclaimed that Butt was on another assignment. Butt said that the ICC was looking into the matter, and till such time, the PCB could not launch its own probe.

The ICC has called upon the Pakistani wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal, for his alleged role in match-fixing. The ICC has said that they need to determine whether there was any role that Akmal played in the match-fixing controversy.

The three Pakistani cricketers, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, have been dropped from the Pakistani side for the rest of the tour of England. However, according to the team manager, Yawar Saeed, the troika of Butt, Asif and Amir were not suspended from the side.

The three beleaguered Pakistani cricketers, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, said to be involved in the match-fixing scandal in the Lord’s Test match, reached London on Wednesday. They will now meet the Pakistan cricket board chairman, Ejaz Butt, before being questioned by the Scotland Yard.

When an international bowler sends down a no-ball as big as what Mohammad Amir did on the first day of the Lord’s Test match between England and Pakistan, he may never be looked at with the same minor irritation that a cricket fan usually shrugs off such an indiscretion. Rather sadly for Suraj Randiv and Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Virender Sehwag-controversy could have been advertently avoided had that game been played after the Lord’s Test match – not too many bowlers would dare bowling deliberate no-balls any more after what happened at Lord’s.

Pakistan has sent out a surprising call to Mohammad Yousuf in the ODI and the T20I squad for the tour of England. Yousuf had earlier been banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board, but was recalled for the third Test match against England at Oval.

Mohammad Irfan, a fast bowler from Pakistan, who had come perilously close to selection for the Pakistani team for the ICC World T20, has been signed up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for one season. However, the deal will be fructified only if the BCCI approves it, given that the relations between India and Pakistan have deteriorated over the last couple of years.
