Comment on Ian Bell run-out versus India at Trent Bridge by Sam http://www.cricketdiaries.com/2011/07/31/ian-bell-run-out-versus-india-at-trent-bridge/comment-page-1/#comment-17936 Sam Mon, 01 Aug 2011 08:11:07 +0000 http://www.cricketdiaries.com/?p=7438#comment-17936 Umm, just for the sake of discussion, the lack of technology has hit soccer at times as well. England were the aggrieved team in the World Cup 2010 - although I agree that cricket has begun to see a lot more of these controversial decisions. Technically, the original decision was the correct one. I agree that England have benefitted from other examples of (non)sportsmanship, but I would be amazed if they were the only team to have done so. So, I repeat "Only cricket could get itself in such a tangled mess. But at least sportsmanship won in the end. Well done M.S.Dhoni & India." Dear Pannua

This game is beyond sportsmanship and all the rest of it - Andrew Strauss did not allow Graeme Smith a runner in the 2009 Champions Trophy, which he did because despite contravening the spirit of the game, he was within the rules to deny him the runner. I can give you 10 other such examples where one team has benefitted and the other has complained - England versus New Zealand with Paul Collingwood at the helm has been a big one. So whether or not Bell was attempting the run, is secondary. The jumper wasn't handed back, the over wasn't called and according to the laws of the game, he was out. Of course, the debate can go on and on about whether or not it was the right thing to do, but rest assured, it will be interesting to see how Strauss and co. go about their sportsmanship in the rest of the series against India and the rest of the series they play.
