The first match of the first edition of the Caribbean Premier League is here. The League has had to overcome plenty of hurdles – lack of sponsorship, players pulling out at the last moment, unavailability of certain T20 superstars – but the West Indies Cricket Board has finally something to put up for display.

Whether this will be as successful as they previous T20 model, a tournament largely dominated by Trinidad and Tobago, shall have to be seen.

St Lucia Zouks have the services of Misbah Ul Haq, who replaced Luke Pomersbach in the squad. The man is in the form of his life, and has nine fifties against West Indies in ODIs; and four on Carribean soil in the last month.

He knows the conditions; he has the skills; and he is one of the best finishers around. Darren Sammy, who is on a revenge mission after being stripped of ODI captaincy, and Tino Best, who clocked 150 during the Pakistan series, shall support him.

Shiv Chanderpaul and Albie Morkel are away playing for Derbyshire for the FLT20 and won’t participate now.

Barbados Tridents have courted controversy by naming a non-Barbados player – Pollard – as a captain. However, the plan may backfore in a totally different way as the man is in abysmal form this year with five ducks.

He will rely on Umar Akmal and Dwayne Smith for fireworks at the top and Jason Holder and Bishoo to provide breakthroughs with the ball. Shakib Al Hasan will join the team late as he is playing for Leicestershire right now.
