The Warriors won the toss and decided to bat first as was expected from the team winning the toss. And much like it has happened throughout the tournament, the Warriors were off to a flying start thanks to their captain Davy Jacobs – 39 runs were added in four overs.
However, Ashwell Prince scored only four of those and was cleaned up by a Doug Bollinger yorker to peg the Warriors back a little. Colin Ingram joined his captain, but Jacobs was to last for only another nine balls before a fired up R Ashwin sent him back, lbw.
The dismissal of Jacobs seemed to have hit the team hard. The rest of them failed to get going against the Super Kings spinners, with none of the rest of the batsmen getting to more than 25.
Both the frontline spinners, Muthiah Muralitharan and Ashwin bowled their four overs so economically that it did not look like it was a T20 game one. The pair conceded 32 off their eight overs and scalped five wickets between them to restrict the hosts to 128/7 in the 20 overs.
The Super Kings begun well in reply, and given that the asking rate was always going to be under manageable proportions, they scored the runs with an ease. The opening pair of Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey added 103 runs for the first wicket; both scoring a half-century.
Vijay went up to score 51 and win the Golden Bat award for scoring the most number of runs in the tournament. Despite his and Suresh Raina’s wicket, the Chennai Super Kings were never in danger of losing the game and they won with eight wickets and six balls to spare.
