Match Timings:
1530 hours GMT or 9.00 pm IST, September 10, 2010.
Venue:
The match will be played at the New Wanderers ground of Johannesburg. Wanderers has one of the quickest pitches in the country, and indeed, the world, which should make the battle interesting. This is given that both sides will go into the match thinking that they have the advantage – Mumbai possess three of the better T20 bowlers, whereas the hosts Lions understand this track like the back of their palm. In the Champions Trophy that was played last year on this ground, the pitches were quick and scores of 150-170 were difficult to chase in 50 overs.
Overview:
There will be a touch of nerves from both sides. Sachin Tendulkar, the captain of the Mumbai Indians will also be the main batsman, and if the tracks are anywhere near as fast as they were in the previous Champions Trophy, the rest of the batsmen in the Mumbai side will need to beware. Else, the ball should come on nicely to the bat, and make things easier for the likes of Sauabh Tiwary and the other Indians. You can find the live score of the Mumbai-Lions match here.
For the Lions, this will be a serious test of skills against a side which has some world-class bowlers. Alviro Petersen may not be very experienced at the international level, but there are some good thing s being mentioned about his temperament. He will need to get the best out of the likes of Zander de Bruyn and Vaughn van Jaarsveld.
Since the game starts at 5.30 pm local time, the track may seam around much more towards the second half of the innings, and the team winning the toss may decide to bat first.
Players to look out for:
Mumbai will obviously rely on Sachin Tendulkar, but it will also be a crucial game for Kieron Pollard, who will be returning to cricket after a Dominic Cork bouncer had rattled his helmet and sent him to the hospital. If he gets going, the Wanderers could well prove to be a small ground.
For the Lions, the experience of playing in T20 cricket at the county level could prove crucial for Zande de Bruyn. What is good is that de Bruyn had played for Somerset, the same side that Pollard played for, which could allow him to share tips with his captain on how to stall the West Indian giant.
Probable XIs:
Mumbai:
Tendulkar, Dhawan, Rayadu, Tiwary, Tare, Bravo, Pollard, Harbhajan, Zaheer, Malinga, McLaren
Lions:
Petersen, Vandiar, van Jarsveld, de Bruyn, Neil McKenzie, Tsolekile, Frylinck, Burger, Cameron, Alexander, O’Reilly
