Live Scorecard and Commentary, , England v Pakistan, 3rd Test at Oval

Pakistan is a cricket team that continues to enthral, excite, exhilarate and exasperate, all at the same time. So, after a rather disappointing performance in the first couple of Test matches at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge, the Pakistanis came back strongly in the third Test match at the Oval to get themselves to within 24 runs of the win, with seven wickets standing. A turnaround had looked as inevitable as it had in the Headingley Test match against Australia earlier in the summer, when the panic buttons were hit, and an implosion caused.

Azhar Ali was run-out in a mix-up with Mohammad Yousuf – who is infamous for his tardy running between the wickets – and this was followed by Yousuf’s dismissal off a James Andeson yorker. From 124/3, Pakistan had gone to 131/5, and when Kamran Akmal was dismissed LBW by Graeme Swann, the Pakistani side was in deep trouble.

In the end, Umar Akmal and Mohammad Aamer took the side out of trouble after battling some nerves and maiden overs bowled by Graeme Swann and Anderson to guide them for a win.

Earlier, England had resumed on their overnight total of 221/9, and could add only one run to their total before Mohammad Aamer bowled the side out for 222. Aamer ended with a five-wicket haul.

Chasing 148 for a win, Pakistan lost Yasir Hameed in the first over for a duck, but an aggressive couple of innings by Salman Butt and Imran Farhat brought the Pakistani side back into the game. Butt scored 48 off 64, while Farhat made a 39-ball 33, to get the side to 103/2.

The fourth Test begins at Lord’s from August 26.
