IPL matches to be reduced to 74?

The IPL Governing Council will meet on August 20 to decide on the number of matches that will be played in the fourth edition of the IPL. Earlier, it had been said that the ten IPL teams – including the two new teams of Pune and Kochi – will play each other twice, before the semi-finals and the final.

This meant that there were 94 games planned for the IPL from next year, which has not gone down too well thanks to the issues with the excessive cricket.

It has been reported that there are plans to reduce the number of IPL games to 74, but one is not sure how will this work out. There are suggestions to make it a two group event, where each group will have five teams each, but even that works out to be 40 games in the preliminary stage – with each side playing eight. Post this, if there is a Super Six or Super Eight stage in the IPL, it will mean that one or two teams from each group will be pruned out – making it unviable for them.

The IPL Governing Council, consisting of the three former players, Ravi Shastri, MAK Pataudi and Sunil Gavaskar, apart from the likes of the interim chief, Chirayu Amin and the rest, would have obviously heard from the teams and will take the decision accordingly.

There will also be a call taken on the maximum number of games any cricketer can play after there were issues with the excessive cricket that the Indian players were supposedly playing.

The fourth edition of the IPL will start in April next year at the completion of the 2011 edition of the cricket World Cup. You can buy your cricket World Cup tickets for 2011 from here.
