West Indies v South Africa (WI v SA) 1st Test, Trinidad Preview, Live Streaming, Videos, Highlights

The West Indies side would be glad that the ODIs and the T20Is are out of the way, but the test becomes more gruelling for them now. Three Test matches against a South African side, which has tasted blood will mean that the hosts, West Indies, have a fight on their hand; especially after having lost the seven limited overs game on tour in succession.

West Indies v South Africa, 1st Test, Live Scorecard and Commentary

The first Test match between West Indies and South Africa will be played at Trinidad, shifted over from Jamaica. While the South Africans will go into the game with their batsmen having had a decent workout in the game against Trinidad, their bowlers will look to get back into the rhythm of bowling the rather long spells. The tour game was rained off after one day’s play and the bowlers had had no chance to practice.

Chris Gayle, on the other hand, will probably know that the selectors are probably at the end of their tether. Whilst Gayle still looks a part of the side as a batsman, and is, probably the best in the business, he has failed to motivate the side in any way. The West Indies need to win at least one game, if not the series for him to continue to remain at the top.

Track Tale:

In the last ten Test matches played on this ground, the West Indian side has won only two, whilst losing seven of the others. The pitch at the Queen’s Park Oval is a fair one, with enough assistance to both, the batsmen and the bowlers. However, given the moist conditions due to the rains, and the fact that the West Indian batsmen have struggled in the recent times and will not be in the best of confidence, one gets the sense that South Africa may want to field first after winning the toss.

Team News:

West Indies have named their 14-member squad, but rather surprisingly, Chris Gayle is the only specialist opener. This could mean that the side will go into the game with a part-time opener; someone like a Darren Bravo, Narsingh Deonarine or Travis Dowlin.

What will also be interesting to follow would be whether Gayle selected Sulieman Benn in the playing eleven after their issues came to light in the fourth ODI of the series. Benn was dropped for the fifth game despite being in the squad. If he does not play, then Shillingford will be chosen in the game.

South Africa will go in with a similar line-up to the one that has been playing Test match cricket. Except that there are question-marks over JP Duminy’s place in the playing eleven. Alviro Petersen could be given a go into the line-up. Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis will very much make it to the top three, with AB de Villiers, Petersen, and one of Duminy or Prince at six, followed by Mark Boucher, Dale Steyn, Paul Harris, Morne Morkel and one of McLaren or Parnell.

Series Standing:

It is more of a tour standing, as the South African side has won seven games in a row, and will look to make it 1-0 in Tests. They will also be mindful of the fact that they are the number two side in the Test world, and winning this series will give them some more points to narrow the distance between them and India.

The Odds Checker:

Bet365 offers odds of 4/5 for a South Africa, which looks like a given. The chances of a draw look more firm (7/4 at Totesport) than the West Indian side winning the game, with Sky Bet offering 8/1 for a West Indian win. Even the bookies think that that’s like another wonder added to the existing list, a West Indian win!
