This is an interesting match-up in the offing as the hosts West Indies take on England in the 8th game of the ICC World T20 at the Providence in Guyana. West Indies had won their previous game against Ireland, but more than the win, it was the convincing nature that would have warmed the hearts of the Caribbean fans.
England, on the other hand, become the last team to be on show in the tournament, and would have been sharpening their claws for some time now. They won both their warm-up games against Bangladesh and the South Africans, and have looked prim and prepared to take the hosts on.
If West Indies win this game, they will be through to the next round without even having to look for the result of the next one between England and Ireland. Even if the match is closely fought and West Indies lose, they should make it through to the Super Eights, but if the English side loses, they will go into their last match against Ireland in a must-win encounter.
Team News:
The West Indian side will interest me. Chris Gayle and Sulieman Benn had missed out in the previous game due to injuries, and while Gayle is expected to be fit, Benn’s injury may not have healed. The West Indian bowling had looked perfect in the previous game, with Kemar Roach, Ravi Rampaul and Dwayne Bravo running through the Irish innings. But one must remember that the conditions for that game were quite different from what they will be today, because that was a night game, while today’s match against England will be a day one.
So, one gets the sense that West Indies may not want to go in with the four medium pacers, and instead, try and play an extra batsmen.
The hosts could also do well to get Kieron Pollard in to bat a tad earlier than when there are three overs remaining. While the same strategy worked in the IPL where the pitches were a lot flatter, and the outfields far smaller, it will be difficult to expect Pollard to go after the bowling from the word go, and hence, make sense for him to be there, at the crease at the start of the 15th or the 16th over.
England come into the tournament, with both, their top-order and their spin bowling taken care of. Never has one seen the really explosive guys like Michael Lumb, Craig Kieswetter, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Eoin Morgan, all with the capability to beat the ball blue, represent an English playing eleven, and nor has one heard of England been a good spinning side!
Both the cases are true, with Graeme Swann as the bowler to watch out for, whereas Michael Yardy getting amongst the wickets in the practice games as a left-arm spinner as well. And if one were to go by what Pietersen thinks of his own bowling, the English have three reasonably good spinners in their ranks!
Head-to-Head:
Rather surprisingly, the West Indies have won three matches against England in this format of the game and lost only one. In World T20 cricket, West Indies beat England in the previous edition of the World T20 to enter the semi-finals at the expense of the English.

Not much to choose from as England go into the game at 10/11 (Coral) as compared to 1/1 for a West Indies (Paddy Power) win.
