Wasim Akram says IPL bowlers tampering with ball
Wasim Akram seems to have stirred a hornet’s nest by saying that he had noticed that there were bowlers who were doctoring the ball in the IPL by rubbing it on the red soil, in short, they were tampering with the ball. Akram added that while this did not help them get reverse swing, it did make the ball discoloured and made it difficult for the batsmen to spot it under the lights.
Akram declined to name the particular bowlers, but named the venues of Mumbai, Rajasthan and Ahmedabad where he said he had noticed the occurrences. Ball tampering has been an issue that has remained in the news for a long time, with the bowlers finding newer ways of tampering with the ball.
Akram said that it was the job of the umpires to be watching the ball very closely and added, “If umpires are not watching then I don’t know who is. In this IPL, umpires should look for players who are putting mud on the ball because you can’t alter the state of the ball with anything”
Akram, who is Kolkata’s bowling coach, added that rubbing the hands in the mud, which is usually done by the spinners is quite different though, and not the problem. He said that it was done to get some grip on the ball, especially if the hands are sweaty.
