Delhi innings
Overs 1 to 6
Yusuf Pathan started the proceedings for the Rajasthan Royals with the ball, but for once the strategy did not work, as 11 runs came off the first over. Despite a not-so-great previous game, Sumit Narwal was picked up in the side and he bowled an excellent couple of overs, one in which only three runs came and had Warner dropped, and the second in which he extracted sweet revenge by getting rid of both the openers; Warner and Sehwag.
Warner was dismissed off a yorker, whereas Sehwag was given a short ball that he only managed to top-edge. With the spinners having leaked runs, Warne threw the ball to Tait to bowl the fifth over, but was greeted by Collingwood with a six and a four and there were a few choice words exchanged between the batsman and the bowler.
Narwal continued with his third over, and although he did not pick up a wicket, it was a superb act of fielding that saw Collingwood sent back, run-out by Adam Voges. Dinesh Karthik almost walked out but was sent back and Kedar Jadhav came to the crease as Delhi ended the Powerplay overs on 52/3.
Overs 7 to 10
Immediately after the Powerplay overs were up, the captain Warne brought himself on, and was treated with much respect. Only six runs came off the over. Warne also got Narwal off and brought on Siddharth Triwedi, who was then hammered for a four off the very first ball but settled down well enough in the rest of the over. It was in Warne’s second over that Jadhav failed to keep himself in check and fooled by a slower one from Warne, to be caught at the long-on boundary.
Dinesh Karthik came in and was immediately busy, with a couple but also got in a tangle with Warne, who accused the batter of pushing him. Triwedi was easily manoeuvred for 9 runs, as Delhi ended the tenth over on 79/4.
Overs 11 to 15
The crucial building stage of the innings after losing the four wickets. Shane Warne was seen off without taking too many risks off him, as 16 runs came off his couple of overs, whereas Pathan conceded only five runs in the 12th over. Shaun Tait was afforded another spell but Karthik spanked him for a boundary and 11 runs came off his over where Pathan’s 15th had nine runs taken off him. Delhi did not lose any wicket during this passage of play and got to 120/4 in 15 overs. Gambhir was on 39 and Karthik on 25.
Overs 16 to 20
These were probably the overs where the match changed around in favour of the Delhi side. Triwedi was flicked away for a six by Karthik, but gave away only five more runs in the over, whereas despite the dismissal of Gambhir, Narwal was smashed for 17 runs in the 17th over.
Warne tried to shuffle things around by getting in Tait, but there was no respite as Karthik took 20 off it, including three successive boundaries, as Warne could only look on. Triwedi conceded only nine runs off the 19th, but Tait was called up to bowl again and he went for 11 in the last over too allow Delhi get away to 188/5 in the 20 overs. Karthik brought up his fifty off 30 balls and ended on 69 off 37 balls. Tait’s four overs cost him 53 runs, in what was the costliest spell of the IPL this year! Rajasthan needed 189 to win!
Rajasthan innings
Overs 1 to 6
The Rajasthan Royals were rocked early in their innings in their pursuit of 189, when Farveez Maharoof scalped a couple of wickets in the very first over to peg them back to 1/2. Naman Ojha and Abhishek Jhunjhunwala added 27 for the third wicket, but Jhunjhunwala scored only 2, and then, both fell within three balls of each other as the Royals struggled to get any momentum in the first Powerplay; getting to 39/4.
What was surprising was that Yusuf Pathan was not promoted up the order.
Overs 7 to 10
Pathan had no option but to go after the bowling from the word go and for some time, it did look like he could make a match out of it. He was dropped when he had just got 2 by Collingwood, and he looked like making the Delhi side pay, by getting a couple of sixes and a couple of fours off successive overs. However, just when he was looking good at 24 that had come off only 13 balls, he swished a short ball from Amit Mishra straight to the fielder at long-on and was dismissed.
Rajasthan ended the tenth over on 69/5 and looking deep in trouble.
Overs 11 to 15
Amit Mishra bowled the 11th over, which was the final straw that broke the Rajasthan back. He first had Adam Voges caught by Warner, and then the same fielder ran Warne out with a direct throw. There was a boundary here and a six there, but Paul Collingwood came on to send back Narwal and despite Tait getting one back with a six off Mishra, a throttled Rajasthan got to 107/8 in 15 overs.
By this time, Warner had had four catches and one run-out to his name!
Overs 16 to 20
There wasn’t much left in the game for the Royals and the last couple of batsmen collapsed without much ado. Sarabjit Ladda took a wicket and then Virender Sehwag came on to get the tenth and the final one to win by 67 runs!
