Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf is a Pakistani player who was earlier known as Yousuf Youhana. He was a Christian earlier, but converted to Islam later in his career and changed his name to Mohammad Yousuf.

He made both, his Test and ODI in 1998, against South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively. He is one of the most elegant looking batsmen in recent times, and his off-drive has usually been a treat to watch.

In 2007, Mohammad Yousuf was not selected in the ICC World T20 squad that Pakistan took to South Africa. Yousuf retired from international cricket in a huff and joined the ICL, a rebel league.

He was promptly banned from international cricket and he took recourse in ICL for some time, before he was coaxed back by the PCB. However, he wasn’t allowed to leave by the ICL authorities given his contract and he ended up having a court case with the ICL authorities.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, a long time friend of Yousuf advised him to get back to ICL and he rejoined the ICL; again, effectively ending his international career. The ICL then went defunct and he was allowed to get to playing for Pakistan.

He was made the captain of Pakistan on the tour of Australia because, nobody else was willing to become one, but went on to lose each of the games. He was subsequently banned by the PCB for life.
