The only unbeaten team in the tournament so far, Mumbai Indians, will take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
Mumbai has played two games in the tournament so far, and won both the matches. And a team which was struggling to find its batting touch right through the previous edition of the IPL has won both the games after scoring 200 plus scores, each time bettering their highest score in the IPL in the process. The Royal Challengers began the tournament rather shoddily with an easy loss to the Kolkata Knight Riders, but have gone from strength to strength after that; beating Punjab and Rajasthan in the process.
Team News:
Jacques Kallis was never one of those whom one would have expected to play this format of the game in the manner that he has done so far. His three innings have yielded scores of 65, 89 and 44, all unbeaten! That has made him the early bird in the race for the Orange Cap, and a threat for most oppositions at the top of the order. Of course, he will need the more aggressive likes of Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey to provide that buffer to the side in case he gets out early. Dale Steyn had not been in much of a touch before the Rajasthan game, but the strategy to bounce the opposition was much to his liking and he will be a man to watch out for.
Mumbai Indians have been a surprise package of the tournament. And it is not so much their scores of 200+ but the fact that the likes of Saurabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayadu have come to the party. Tendulkar had sprung a surprise in the previous game by sending in Tiwary and Rayadu over the West Indian pair of Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, but one gets the feeling that at least one of the two should take on the bowling during the 6-15 over period. What will be interesting to see is how the Mumbai pacers go about their business if they are defending a par-200 score.
Head-to-Head:
Mumbai’s first ever game in the first ever IPL was against Bangalore and they had lost a close enough match. After that, Mumbai Indians had beaten the Royal Challengers in the second game in 2008. This repeated in the 2009 edition as well, as Bangalore won the first game between the two sides, while there was a reversal in fortunes in the second to leave the score between the two sides at 2-2.
The Odd(s) Corner:
Too early to be christening any team favourites, but for now, Mumbai definitely look like they will go into the game as one. Coral offers 8/11 for Mumbai’s win, as compared to Boylesports’ 13/10 for Bangalore to register their third successive triumph. Either way, one team will go to the top of the table with three wins.
