The glam team of the tournament, the Kolkata Knight Riders, will look to prove that their previous wins were no flash in the pans, when they take on the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League today. The Kolkata Knight Riders go into the game with two wins out of two and to give you a perspective of the kind of turnaround, they had only three wins in the entire tournament consisting of the 14 matches last year!
As compared to that, the Chennai Super Kings did not begin their campaign too well with a rather one-sided loss to the Deccan Chargers, but if one knows skipper MS Dhoni, things could be changed around pretty quickly.
Team News:
Sourav Ganguly may not want to change too many things after all. He has had a winning combination going and he would like to continue with the same, unless there are some injuries. Chris Gayle should have landed in the country given that they had a flight immediately after the last game against the Zimbabweans back home. But, one gets the sense that the management may not want to change the winning combination which will mean that the side will continue to play a similar eleven.
For the Chennai side, it was evident that the bowling was barely up to the mark. The bowlers struggled for most part of the twenty overs despite scalping a couple of early wickets against the Deccan Chargers, and it is evident that Albie Morkel’s bad run of bowling form has continued to haunt him even in the IPL. Asking him to bowl with the new ball is expecting the stars, and one would think that Dhoni will be making a couple of changes to his bowling. The batting can be expected to remain the same.
Head-to-Head:
In 2008, Chennai had won both their games against the Kolkata Knight Riders, and rather convincingly at that. What was more surprising was that Kolkata did not lose only four games in the entire tournament in 2009, and two of them were against Chennai, when one match was abandoned due to rain and the other was won by the Knight Riders!
The Odd(s) Corner:
The Chennai Super Kings (10/11 at Sporting Bet) are marginal favourites, as compared to Kolkata Knight Riders (Extra Bet), but that has only to do with the previous seasons. Knight Riders could well be the surprise package of the tournament.
